Why Is Empty So Scary?

We always wish for more time. But then when we have it we are bored. We don’t know what to do.

We wish we had more money. But then when we have it we spend it on trivial things instead of investing in our future.

We wish we had time to write. Time to build. Time to play. Time to love. But when we are faced with the blank page or the empty lot or the vacation or the person we have a crush on we are nearly paralyzed. It’s hard to do what we wanted in the first place. Write. Build. Play. Love.

Why is empty so scary?

Because the possibilities are endless and we have forgotten how to point ourselves in one direction and just start moving. Kids do this all day every day. They don’t think they just go. And once they are done they move right on to the next thing.

How can we possibly choose what words to right when we can write anything? And what should we play when the world is our playground?

The trick to the whole thing is that it doesn’t actually matter what you write. Or what you play. Or what you build. The key is to just start writing. Because that’s the only way you’re going to write something.

Point in a direction and go. Empty is scary because we can go in any direction. So we waste time deliberating instead of acting. Do yourself a favor and get out of your way. Point. Go. And don’t stop long enough to let your fear take over.

Empty is scary. But the solution is forward motion. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go.
