Unpredictable

No matter how much planning we do we can’t predict the unpredictable. I was reminded of this on my way home from a work trip this morning. I had my day planned. I’d catch my train. Meet my wife for an appointment. And be home watching movies that evening. And for the most part that is what happened. Except for an unexpected accident.

I’m fine. I’m lucky. And I’m home safe now. I held my son a few minutes ago after he woke up from a nightmare or tooth pain. I held him. I told him I loved him. We are safe and sound now. But safety can be precarious.

We do our best to plan for the unexpected. We save money. Or we stock up on earthquake supplies. Whatever it is. We plan in order to put some order to a chaotic world. But we can’t prevent chaos from creeping in all the time.

The reminder to live fully and to appreciate what you have is a good one. Even if it comes after something scary or upsetting. Keep planning. But also keep living in the moment. Living fully. Loving with your whole heart. Laugh and hug and don’t hold back. You’ve only got one life to live. Regret can be worse than a broken bone or a totaled car.
