The Present Moment and Space Balls

Is so hard. Dealing with a sleepless night or fussing child. Watching someone die. Feeling anxious about speaking up in front of a crowd. Whatever may be happening in the moment can be so difficult to manage.

But it’s usually because we aren’t focused on the moment. We are focused on the unknown moments ahead.

And the crazy thing is we will never know what those moments will be. We can’t predict the future no matter how hard we try. They will be what they will be and we have so little control over it.

What we do control is who we are and how we let ourselves feel in the actual moment. Breathing deeply. Saying positive things. Being compassionate. Feeling the actual sensations that are happening to us now. And not what we are worried about feeling at some future point in time.

Sure the moment you’re in might be hard. But worrying about anything outside of this present moment won’t help you deal with the here and now any better. And further still not focusing on this moment while it’s happening let’s what precious mercies you may actually experience slip away forever.

Be here. Right here. Right now.

PS I couldn’t help but think of the scene in Space Balls where they’re watching Space Balls the movie and accidentally skip to the moment that’s happening. https://youtu.be/5drjr9PmTMA “When will then be now? Soon.” Too good.
