There are lots of things we don’t control in life. Global pandemics. People wearing masks down under their noses. Trends like Mac n’ cheese on/in your sandwich. And there are greater inevitabilities that will continue no matter how hard we resist, like the sun setting/rising, the seasons changing, and growing older. It can almost feel like we don’t control anything and have to constantly adjust to the chaos.
But that’s not entirely true. There’s a lot we do control. Like where we spend our time. Who we spend it with. What we want to achieve and how we go about setting goals to get there.
There’s also ways to measure what we do that can show us just where we are losing that control and letting the chaos dictate the flow of our lives.
I revamped my work calendar today. I realized I was scheduling things without any kind of consistency or plan. And that can make things feel very busy but not very meaningful or productive.
One reason I did this is because I want to know what I accomplished each day or week. I want to measure it. I also did this because I have big goals and if I don’t take control of my time now I’ll continue to be overwhelmed. And the last thing I want when focusing on a big goal is to feel like I’m squeezing it in between a bunch of meaningless unfocused riff raff.
Where does the time go? What did I do today? Why can’t I focus? This is the world we live in. We are set up to be distracted and worn down. We have to fight and take control of our time in order to achieve our goals and feel like we did something that matters.
Curious how you’re managing your time and taking control of your days? What’s working? What’s not? What did you accomplish? Was it meaningful?
Thanks for reading. It’s good to be back.
