Mercy

Humans (and animals) are tenacious. Coping with extreme circumstances, loss, pain. Facing the challenges of each day bravely even knowing that defeat is certain to come. Persevering. Trying again and again and again.

Sometimes we just want some mercy. For ourselves. For the people and critters we love. For our planet.

We want some higher power to make the decision for us. So we don’t have to do the difficult thing. Or the hard work. That’s not a bad thing or a criticism. Life. Is. Hard. I’m continually amazed by what people can endure. I don’t think it’s wrong at all to need some help from time to time.

When you’re in the thick of it, whatever situation you’re in that demands every last drop of you, it’s hard to see a way out. It’s hard to remain hopeful. It’s hard to stay positive.

Perhaps the mercy we seek is more of a state of mind. Maybe we have the power to grant it to ourselves when we need it the most. To take the pressure off. To be loving. Forgiving. To see our faults and imperfection as part of our humanity and not something to rake ourselves over the coals with.

It’s not all bad after all. We tend to let the bad overshadow the good. That’s a choice. It’s easier to focus on what we lack or failed at than what we have or the small unseen victories that we achieve. Yes we can learn from failing but we can also learn to be gentle and kind with ourselves and our loved ones. It’s so critical to our happiness and survival to grant small mercies every day. How are we to get through otherwise?
