Normally when there is traffic and I really want to get somewhere fast I get annoyed. And I focus on the inconvenience and impatience. It tends to sour the mood for everyone. And doesn’t change the fact that it will still take a longer time than I’d like to get there.
But tonight I barely even thought about it. I didn’t even look it up on my map ahead of time. I chose to spend my energy spending time with my family. Talking to my wife about her day. Holding my son’s hand. Scratching my dog’s head. And singing and dancing to our favorite songs.
It was wonderful. And it set a great tone for the rest of the night. By the time we got to our destination I was relaxed and happy instead of angry and exhausted.
There are things we can’t control, like traffic. And things we can, like our mood. Accepting the first and adjusting the second are so important to enjoying life. And who knew a car ride through traffic could be such a good time?
