Get Excited

It’s hard to come back to work after time off for the holidays. Especially when it feels like you’re not facing new challenges or taking on any new and exciting goals. So, what to do? How do you get excited for a new year and the same job?

Take on something outside the scope of your current role. This could mean learning a totally new skills like SQL or reporting or anything not directly related to what you do on a daily basis.

It’s also a great time to collaborate. Chances are someone else on your team or in your org is feeling a similar sense of stagnation and is looking for a new project. Invent something that might be useful and work together in some spare time to bring it to fruition.

Even if neither of the above are a success it can be enough to spark excitement and renewed interest in your work. And you’ll also likely learn something you didn’t know before. Or make a connection and build a relationship that could pay off big time later on.

New is a luxury. And when we don’t have it it’s important to find ways to stay excited about our work. Passion projects have a place too, but our job pays the bills. And doing it well means looking for ways to make it interesting. Finding others who can help keep you tuned in or challenge your ways of thinking.

It might feel like it’s a brand new decade and you’re doing the same old thing. But there’s no better time to come at your work with renewed enthusiasm and to make it exciting again.
