Advice For Someone New

Everyone learns differently. We forge our own paths. Sometimes starting slow. Sometimes having beginner’s luck. Sometimes starting off seeming to know everything with successes coming easily. But it’s all a big process.

I got a ton of advice when I started a new role a year and a half ago. It was all mostly great and helpful and supportive. But this journey has been all my own. Living the stress of the unknown. Making mistakes. Being disappointed in my lack of experience and business savvy. Taking big steps forward and then stalling again.

Progress and growth are non linear though but we often try to teach or advise others like it is. I have learned by doing. By challenging myself and volunteering for new projects and tasks. By learning to speak up in meetings and to trust my instincts. By making myself uncomfortable over and over again. And by recognizing areas where I can be better. I have had highs and lows and questioned myself. Ultimately I am flabbergasted by how far I’ve come.

My experiences have been invaluable to my growth and I’m excited that there are still so many challenges ahead. I have finally found another place where I can see how far I can push the limits of what I’m capable of.

So, back to that advice for someone new. I told someone today: don’t be afraid to dive in and make mistakes. Don’t wait to move forward just start moving. The faster you move the more you will learn. And try to go easy on yourself along the way.
